Detailed History & Spiritual Significance of Bhimashankar

Bhimashankar Temple is nestling high in the Western Ghats (Sahyadri Hills) in Pune district, Maharashtra. Surrounded by lush rainforests, it is one of the revered 12 Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva and serves as the sacred origin point of the Bhima River.

Ancient Nagara Architecture & Royal Patronage: Built in classical Nagara architectural style, the stone temple dates back to the 13th century. The complex was expanded in the 18th century by Maratha statesmen Nana Phadnavis and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who constructed the grand Sabhamandap. The temple complex also features a giant Roman-style bell presented by Maratha Commander Chimaji Appa after capturing Vasai Fort in 1739.

Key Highlights & Sacred Features at Bhimashankar

1. Swayambhu Jyotirlinga

The self-manifested Shiva Linga situated in the lower sanctum (*Garbhagriha*). Water continuously flows over the holy Linga from a natural underground spring.

2. Wildlife Sanctuary & Shekru

Set inside the dense Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, home to Maharashtra's state animal — the Indian Giant Squirrel (*Shekru*).

3. Historic Chimaji Appa Bell

A heavy iron bell hanging outside the temple court, captured by Chimaji Appa from the Portuguese at Vasai Fort and dedicated to Lord Shiva in 1739.

4. Bhima River Origin & Gupt Bhimashankar

The sacred river Bhima originates here. A 2 km forest trail leads to Gupt Bhimashankar, where the stream flows directly over a hidden Shiva Linga.
